Cordarone Generic - India

Cordarone is a trade name for amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic agent used to treat severe and possibly fatal irregularities in heartbeat. Cordarone is available by physician prescription.

Drug Information

Amiodarone is a Class III antiarrhythmic agent used to treat atrial or ventricular cardiac dysrhythmias (irregular heartbeat). Side effects with amiodarone are relatively common, but the drug continues to be prescribed due to its effectiveness in treatment of cases that are otherwise difficult to be treated with medication.

Amiodarone can block certain electrical signals that can cause the heartbeat to become abnormal.

Amiodarone is included in the “Model List of Essential Medicines” by the World Health Organization (WHO). It demarks amiodarone as crucial in a basic health care system.

Cordarone is prescribed for atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation/defibrillation, only if other drugs are deemed ineffective or intolerable for the patient.

Cordarone is rarely used for conditions that are not life-threatening.

Cordarone is available as pink tablets containing 200 milligrams of amiodarone HCL.

Inactive ingredients in Cordarone include starch, lactose, povidone, magnesium stearate and colloidal silicon dioxide.

Dosage

Cordarone dosage will vary as per physician recommendation, age, severity of the condition and response to treatment.

Cordarone is usually prescribed to be taken orally once or twice a day.

Cordarone can be taken either with or without meals. However, it’s important to choose which way to take Cordarone and stick to it for each dose every day.

Dosages of Cordarone should be taken exactly as prescribed and on time.

Warnings and Precautions

Cordarone can lead to significant toxicity levels, particularly pulmonary toxicity that can be potentially fatal. Therefore, Cordarone should only be prescribed if the condition is life threatening or as a last resort where all other medications have failed.

Due to the significant risk associated, patients may be required to be hospitalized for at least a week when the initial doses of Cordarone are taken.

In a low but significant number of cases, Cordarone has been known to worsen the existing irregular arrhythmia.

Amiodarone can affect the regular functioning of pacemakers and defibrillators.

Do not take Cordarone if allergic to amiodarone or any other ingredient in the drug or similar substances.

Cordarone may not be suitable for patients with iodine allergies due to the presence of povidone.

Cordarone may cause increased photosensitivity, therefore take necessary precautions to protect the skin and eyes from sunlight.

Cordarone could potentially be unsafe for patients with a history of lung disease, liver disease or thyroid problems.

Amiodarone can cause a condition called QT prolongation that affects the heart rhythm. This condition can cause serious but rarely fatal symptoms such as severe dizziness.

Cordarone may react negatively with other medications. Inform the prescribing physician regarding all prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal remedies being taken before starting Cordarone.

Cordarone is not recommended for pregnant, breastfeeding and pediatric patients.

Elderly patients could be more susceptible to the side effects of Cordarone.

Side Effects

Cordarone and amiodarone could potentially cause one or more of the following side effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling tired or fatigue
  • Swelling in limbs
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Side effects are not limited to the above.

Immediately consult a physician if side effects continue to persist or worsen over time.
