Zyrtec is an antihistamine drug which is used against the effects of histamine in our body, which is an organic compound being involved in responses like reactions in injuries or allergies.

Zyrtec is also known as Cetirizine which is used for relieving the allergies like running nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, swelling and itching in throat. This drug is available in three states, in form of tablets which are water soluble, in form of chewable tablets and in form of syrups.

How to take Zyrtec?

You should make sure that it is prescribed to you by your doctor so that you can take the dose as directed, that usually one tablet to be taken daily. But if it is a self-medication treatment, then you should read all the directions mentioned on the package as this dosage is based upon a person’s age and medical conditions as well. Most importantly this medication is not allowed for the ladies who are either pregnant or are breast-feeding a baby.

As we know the 3 states of this medicine, so the dosage depends on the state itself. If in case, you are taking the normal water soluble tablet, the table should get dissolved at the tongue and then swallowed with water; in case of chewable tablets, each tablet should be chewed well and then should swallow it; and in case of in-take of syrups, the dose should be measured carefully in the specific spoon or the provided cup. This could be taken with or without food.

What happens in case of miss-dose of Zyrtec?

If in case you get to remember that you have missed any of your dose, however you are almost onto the timings of your next dose, then you can skip the missed one and continue with the normal scheduled dosage and never intake extra doses.

What happens in case of over-dose of Zyrtec?

If any person would ingest the medicine more than the recommended dosage like 4 or 5 times a day, they can experience the below over-dose symptoms:

• Restlessness
• Drowsiness
• Dry mouth
• Nervousness

What to avoid?

As the intake of this drug makes you feel a bit sleepy as well, so you should make sure that you are not taking this medication if in case you have to either drive or do something which requires you to be alert. And on the other side of the coin, consuming of alcohol when you are under this medication would increase the side effects of this drug.

Side effects of Zyrtec

While you are taking this medication and you feel any of the below side effects, or any allergic reactions contact your doctor immediately.

The serious side effects are:
• Trouble in breathing
• Rashes and itching on face, tongue or throat
• Swelling of your tongue
• Difficulty in passing urine
• Unconsciousness
• Stomach pain

The less serious side effects are:
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Feeling too tired
• Headache
